During The Second World War, the Netherlands was occupied by Nazi Germany. After 4 years of occupation, the south of the Netherlands was liberated. Above the rivers followed first the Hunger Winter. It was not until the following spring that the whole of the Netherlands was liberated.
Why do you think we're celebrating on May 5th? We were liberated from the Germans that day. It's history by now, but it's too important to forget.
